Our volunteers have been doing an amazing job of digitally stitching images of the original technical drawings in our Cook, Welton & Gemmell archive (some of which are almost 1m in length!). See below for some examples.

Background information obtained from ‘Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Shipbuilders of Hull and Beverley 1883-1963’ by Michael Thompson et al (Hutton Press 1999).
My late father worked for CW&G as a ships joiner and made scale models of some of the trawlers. I think some were given to the Owners and some to Lloyd’s. I have a few photos of both the trawlers and models.

I currently own and live on board LV14 – SPURN lightvessel (now called SULA. ). Based in Gloucester Docks – see http://www.sulalightship.com – history. Trying to contact anyone who might have served on her.
Hi, I recently purchased a silver bowl, the engraving on the bowl refers to a presentation from Cook, Welton and Gemmell to Mrs A L Kewney on the launching of HMT Hayling in 1942 at Beverley. do you have any documentation on this vessel or who the lady is that is mentionede on the inscription?

Thanks for your message. This looks like one of the minesweepers that were built for the Royal Navy. Unfortunately, our archive doesn’t contain any information about these vessels as I believe the records may have been retained at the time by the navy as classified information. It’s possible that they may still survive today in a naval archive, but this is just speculation.
From personal knowledge, I think the Kewney family were jewellers in Beverley, so Mrs Kewney may/may not have been connected to this.

My late father was Chief Supt. Engineer for Boston Deep Sea Fisheries and Cook Welton and Gemmell were involved with some of their trawlers.
